SUNNYVALE, Calif., Oct. 24 - Identix Incorporated (Amex: IDX), a worldwide leader in providing biometric authentication, security and identification solutions, announced today that its joint venture with Sylvan Learning Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq: SLVN), Sylvan/Identix Fingerprinting Centers, has added eight additional applicant fingerprinting locations in California over the past six months. These additions throughout the State bring the total Sylvan/Identix applicant fingerprinting locations in California to 31. Each location is equipped with an Identix TouchPrint(TM) 600 Live Scan system, a fingerprint workstation designed to provide high-quality fingerprint scanning for civil applications. These Live Scan systems optically scan and capture an individual's fingerprints and electronically transmit the data to California Department of Justice (DOJ) for comparison against both State of California and FBI criminal history records. Identix's Live Scan systems drastically reduce the response time for an individual background check, cutting processing time for applicants and employees down to days from what once took up to several months.

According to Sylvan/Identix President Ron Wadsworth, the demand for civil fingerprinting services at Sylvan/Identix locations in California alone has more than doubled over the past year, and is averaging approximately 200,000 applicants per year. California has seen a significant rise in civil fingerprinting requests as more and more government agencies, as well as private enterprises, are requiring background checks as a prerequisite to employment.

"We are experiencing a tremendous demand for electronic fingerprinting for background checks, especially from the California Department of Social Services for day care and foster care applicants," Wadsworth said. "These additional eight locations will help support this demand, which we believe will continue to grow as more and more agencies and businesses require background checks for applicants and potential employees."
