MINNETONKA, Minn., Mar 11, 2003 /PRNewswire-FirstCall via COMTEX/ --
Identix Incorporated (Nasdaq: IDNX), the world's leading multi-biometric security technology company and Sentillion, Inc., the leading provider of single sign-on solutions for healthcare, announced today that San Diego-based Sharp HealthCare Systems plans to deploy what the companies believe to be the largest network of biometrically enabled, strong authentication solutions ever installed in a healthcare environment. Sharp placed the order with Sentillion to deploy Sentillion's innovative Vergence(R) product suite. Vergence integrates Identix' fingerprint biometric BioLogon(R) authentication software and provides solutions for strong authentication, single sign-on, context management, and privacy management for the healthcare industry. The order by Sharp also includes 7,000 Identix(R) BioTouch(TM) USB fingerprint readers and an 11,000-user BioLogon server license.
Recognized as one of the "most wired healthcare systems in the nation" by Hospitals and Health Networks magazine, Sharp HealthCare initially installed the context management, single sign-on, and privacy auditing portions of Sentillion's Vergence suite last year. The addition of Sentillion's single sign-on capability and Identix' fingerprint biometric authentication enables doctors, nurses, and other caregivers to log onto the system with a single username and a touch of their finger in order to gain access to all of the necessary clinical programs, without needing to log on to each clinical program individually.
"This is the future of healthcare IT," said William Spooner, senior vice president and chief information officer for Sharp HealthCare. "Over the past year, we've re-engineered our entire clinical system with Vergence technology, making it easier to use and more accessible for caregivers, while integrating key technologies, such as Identix' biometric authentication products, that provide absolute privacy for patient information and thorough tracking and reporting to meet all the HIPAA requirements. Biometrically-enabled, strong authentication is the final piece."
"Sharp HealthCare is a pioneer in healthcare IT," said Eric Corkhill, vice president of sales for Sentillion. "Sharp has built an enterprise network that can serve as a model for other healthcare organizations. They've succeeded in creating a system that is fully integrated, fast and easy to navigate, and that now incorporates state-of-the-art security."
Identix President & CEO Dr. Joseph Atick commented, "We believe that this deployment will be the largest biometric fingerprint network security deployment in the healthcare industry's history. This industry-leading step by Sharp has the potential to help pave the way and define the solution of choice in the healthcare industry for secure network access, as well as for compliance with the strict confidentiality requirements under HIPAA for access to patient records. We commend Sharp for its leadership in setting the technology and security standard for the healthcare industry and we are pleased to be their biometric provider of choice. We are also pleased to see our relationship with industry-leader Sentillion result in such a significant order and look forward to continuing our mutually beneficial relationship."
With more than 1,800 licensed beds and 2,500 physicians, Sharp HealthCare is San Diego's most comprehensive health care delivery system, operating a network of hospitals, medical groups, nursing facilities, and a variety of community health services.
Vergence offers healthcare organizations a suite of products that enable simplified access to healthcare applications. The Vergence product suite was designed specifically to meet the productivity, privacy and security needs of hospitals, medical clinics and healthcare providers. Vergence enables for the healthcare enterprise single sign-on access, strong authentication, single patient selection and privacy management across multiple applications. Combined with an Identix BioTouch USB fingerprint reader, BioLogon enterprise solutions provide a highly scaleable information technology security system capable of protecting thousands of computers and integrating with complex network domain configurations. BioLogon client/server architecture extends and enhances the security infrastructure of a company's current O/S, allowing an administrator to customize network security policies and enforce strong authentication methods. BioLogon software's state-of-the-art fingerprint technology provides one of the highest levels of network security available while significantly eliminating help-desk calls related to lost or forgotten passwords. In single unit quantities, the MSRP for Identix BioTouch USB fingerprint reader with BioLogon client software is $129.99. In single unit quantities, the MSRP for Identix BioLogon server software is $75.00. Financial details of this particular transaction were not disclosed.
